Personal Profile

Louise Wakefield is a registered Psychologist with the Psychology Board of Australia and a member of the Australian Psychological Society, the Australian Association of Psychologists Inc., and the Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing Association of Australia. Louise works with adult clients and offers psychological therapy across a range of clinical presentations, with a special interest in complex trauma and interpersonal relationship difficulties.

Louise holds a Bachelor of Psychological Science with Honours from the University of Queensland and previously studied Natural Therapies at the Australian College of Natural Medicine. Louise brings a holistic mindset to her work, supporting clients to improve not just their mental and emotional wellbeing, but also their physical and spiritual health.

Over her career, Louise has worked extensively across private practice settings, government organisations, and community-based services throughout Brisbane and surrounding areas. Her experience includes work with the Department of Communities Child Safety, Transformations Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Centre, the Prince Charles Mental Health Unit, and non-profit organisations such as Encircle. Louise has facilitated a wide range of therapeutic groups including grief and loss, multicultural support groups, self-confidence building, literacy mentoring, and women's personal development programs. Louise has also designed and delivered courses on grief, loss, self-awareness and personal growth.

Louise adopts a flexible, client-centred approach to therapy, tailoring interventions to individual needs using a combination of evidence-based psychological frameworks, including:

Louise is especially passionate about working with individuals who have experienced complex and developmental trauma, childhood abuse, domestic violence, and personality disorders. She has spent more than five years working in a trauma-specific centre, offering targeted support to clients living with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Complex PTSD, Dissociative symptoms, and emotional dysregulation. Her trauma-informed approach helps individuals to desensitise traumatic memories, reprocess distressing beliefs and emotions, and build emotional regulation skills that allow them to regain control and autonomy in their lives.

Louise is also deeply committed to helping individuals and couples build meaningful, secure and connected relationships. She draws on the Gottman Relationship Method and Circle of Security principles to help clients increase emotional intelligence, improve communication, and develop healthy attachment patterns. Louise believes that effective communication, mutual respect, and the ability to express and receive love are the foundations of all meaningful relationships. She assists couples in building emotional resilience, learning self-soothing strategies, and navigating challenges collaboratively while honouring individual and shared goals.
