How the Assessment Process Works

All psychological assessments at the Lightner Centre begin with an Initial Clinical Interview. During this appointment, your psychologist will:

  • Take a detailed history

  • Clarify your current concerns and goals

  • Determine the most appropriate assessment pathway

If you have a GP referral and Mental Health Care Plan, a Medicare rebate may be applied to this initial consultation.

Subsequent assessment sessions, observations, and feedback appointments do not typically attract Medicare rebates. However, if you are under 25 years of age and referred by a GP for an assessment related to a complex neurodevelopmental condition or eligible disability, you may be entitled to Medicare rebates for the assessment sessions. Please contact our reception team to discuss your individual circumstances.

The duration and structure of assessment sessions will vary depending on the assessment protocol selected. Your psychologist will outline the expected timeframe and process at the conclusion of your initial consultation.

Comprehensive Written Reports

Following the assessment and feedback session, you will receive a comprehensive written report that:

  • Summarises assessment findings

  • Identifies strengths and areas of difficulty

  • Provides any relevant diagnoses

  • Includes clear, evidence-based recommendations

Reports are written to be clinically robust and appropriate for use with health professionals, educational institutions, employers, and other relevant agencies.
