Professional Supervision

At the Lightner Centre, we offer professional supervision provided by our Principal Psychologist, Dr Sharelle Smith and our Clinical Psychologists, Dr Mary Asic-Kobe, Jayde Phillipson, and Lauren McIntosh. Our supervisors are board-approved and bring a wealth of experience from their roles as both supervisees and experienced supervisors themselves. This dual perspective enables them to offer deep insight into the professional and personal challenges that can arise in clinical practice, while also highlighting the numerous benefits of effective supervision.

Our professional supervision services are designed to support and guide both early-career psychologists and those with more established practices, ensuring the continued development of clinical skills, maintenance of ethical standards, and provision of evidence-based care to their clients.

Whether you are navigating complex clinical cases, enhancing your therapeutic techniques, or managing the emotional demands of the profession, our team is committed to offering tailored supervision that fosters growth, confidence, and resilience in your professional journey.

Our supervisors work collaboratively with supervisees to:

  • Strengthen clinical skills and therapeutic effectiveness

  • Explore and address challenging cases and dilemmas

  • Maintain professional and ethical standards

  • Enhance self-awareness and professional development

  • Build resilience to manage burnout, stress, and emotional fatigue

  • Support research practices

  • Provide guidance for ongoing career development and progression

In addition to one-on-one supervision, we also offer group supervision sessions where participants can learn from each other’s experiences, share insights, and discuss complex cases in a supportive and constructive environment.

At the Lightner Centre, we understand that professional supervision is not just a requirement but an invaluable resource for growth and well-being in the psychology profession.

Whether you're newly embarking on your career or you're an experienced clinician looking to refine your practice, our supervision services are here to support your continuous professional and personal development.

Group Therapy

At the Lightner Centre, we offer evidence-based group therapy programs designed to address a wide range of mental health concerns and personal challenges. Group therapy provides a unique and powerful opportunity to learn, connect with others, and develop specific skills in a safe, supportive, and structured environment. It’s an effective way to foster personal growth, increase self-awareness, and improve emotional well-being, while benefiting from the shared experiences of others.

Our group therapy sessions are led by experienced Clinical Psychologists (or Clinical Psychology Registrars) who are well versed in creating a compassionate and inclusive space where participants feel comfortable to explore their challenges and gain valuable insights. By participating in group therapy, individuals not only receive support from the therapist but also from peers who may be experiencing similar struggles. This shared dynamic can reduce feelings of isolation, promote empathy, and help individuals feel understood in ways that individual therapy may not always offer.

We offer a variety of group therapy programs throughout the year, tailored to meet specific needs and concerns, such as:

  • Anxiety and Stress Management: Learn techniques to manage anxiety, reduce stress, and build resilience through mindfulness, relaxation, and coping strategies.

  • Depression and Mood Regulation: Gain support and skills to manage symptoms of depression, regulate emotions, and enhance mood through evidence-based techniques.

  • Grief and Loss: Share experiences with others who understand the pain of losing a loved one, while developing coping strategies to navigate grief.

  • Trauma Recovery and PTSD: Engage in a healing process with others who have experienced trauma, using specialised therapeutic approaches to foster recovery and resilience.

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) Skills: Build practical skills to challenge negative thought patterns, develop healthier perspectives, and manage emotions effectively.

  • Mindfulness and Emotional Regulation: Learn mindfulness techniques to increase emotional awareness, reduce impulsivity, and improve mental well-being.

  • Parenting Support and Skills: For those navigating parenting challenges, this program offers a supportive space to learn strategies for managing stress, understanding family dynamics, and supporting children's emotional health.

Group therapy provides a more interactive experience where participants can not only gain from the structured therapeutic content but also share strategies and solutions with others. These sessions are ideal for individuals who benefit from group interaction, mutual support, and gaining different perspectives on their issues.

Throughout the year, we will offer different programs based on demand and therapeutic needs. Each program is carefully crafted to cater to the specific goals and challenges of the participants, ensuring that everyone walks away with practical skills and tools for managing their mental health and improving their lives.

Details on available programs, dates, and registration information will be advertised as they become available.
